Mountain Rescue in the Torridon mountains

Description

Tour guide Tess climbs a mountain in the Torridon range. She is unprepared and gets into difficulties. A mountain rescue helicopter is called out to look for her. Tess calls the emergency number 112 and learns how to find a grid reference on a map to reveal exactly where she is.

Classroom Ideas

Students could each be given simple maps of a mountainous area and they could use these to role-play making emergency phone calls and describing their grid reference. Some students could pretend they do not know their grid reference and describe things around them instead; the emergency services operator will then have to work out from the description where they are on the map.

Students could also use this clip to introduce safety procedures that should be taken when hill climbing in the Scottish mountains. They could begin by discussing precautions they think you need to take from their own prior knowledge, and the precautions which should be taught to others. Students could then design their own safety posters for hill walkers.
