The death of John Comyn

Description

When Robert the Bruce and John Comyn met in Dumfries, the two men fell out pretty spectacularly. Bruce stabbed Comyn, before his men entered the church to finish him off. By killing Comyn in a church, Bruce was excommunicated and this severely set back his cause.

Classroom Ideas

Students could set up their own murder investigation squad to gather evidence on the death of John Comyn. Students could search online and in books to find evidence of a motive and accounts of the events. They must consider and decide upon which sources are reliable and accurate, and can therefore be used as evidence. A classroom trial could then be held with lawyers and witnesses supporting the prosecution and defence. The teacher or group of students could act as a jury and must decide if Bruce is guilty or not guilty of plotting to murder John Comyn.
