How important is public opinion?

After an initial campaign to stop the closure of Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow failed, Dr Jean Turner stood and was elected as an independent MSP. One time First Minister, Jack McConnell talks about the role of public consultation on deciding on legislation. When the Scottish Executive proposed to make it illegal to smack children under three, a public survey carried out by the Scottish Parent Teacher Council brought a reverse in government policy.

Classroom Ideas

Before playing the clip there could be teacher-led discussion around the theme: “Does our opinion matter? How much could our opinion influence decisions within school and in our society?” Students could then watch the clip and take notes on examples of when public opinion has influenced decisions.
