Dating Ancient Egyptian artefacts

Description

The presenter is asked to look at a range of toys from different periods and use their features to date them. Using the same method, an archaeologist shows how she dates artefacts from Ancient Egypt.

Classroom Ideas

Students could examine a collection of familiar objects and put them in order of age, based on what they know about each item. For example, a modem would come after a telephone because we know the telephone was invented before the internet. Students could be asked to apply similar logic to a series of pictures of Egyptian artefacts. Their choices could be based on information provided about when various materials were used or invented. For example, a bronze knife could be featured in a picture and students could check their list of clues to learn that Egyptians didn’t use bronze until after 2000 BC.
