In the 20th century, America thrived and became prosperous. Many Americans enjoyed a better quality of life and new luxuries. Society and culture were transformed. However, not all Americans lived the American dream.

During the 1920s American society was very divided. Issues of morality, immigration, politics and race highlighted key fundamental differences. These tensions deeply affected people’s lives and experiences.

The American economy had suffered economic slumps before, but the Great Depression was the worst in the country’s history. It was a period of mass unemployment, hardship and increased poverty.

The New Deal led to a transformative period. American politics, society and culture were changed by the Great Depression and President Franklin D Roosevelt’s response to the economic crisis. World War Two brought further changes.

New hopes and opportunities were created by economic recovery after World War Two. However, this was also a period of political hysteria. The struggle for civil rights put activism at the forefront of American political life.

Poverty and inequality persisted during the 1960s and 1970s in America. Government policies aimed to address the country’s social problems. The women’s movement developed to campaign against sexism.
