Mood and character

It is important to create the appropriate mood and character when playing a piece of music. A performance can be technically perfect, but without the right mood and character, it may not engage the listener emotionally.

The correct tempo and dynamics will help create the mood. A sad, mournful piece would tend to work better when played slowly. A fast, lively dance would be less effective if played very quietly and with changes of tempo.

Keyboard players can enhance their performance by selecting the appropriate voice, accompaniment style and to create the right mood for the music.

Drummers should consider the use of appropriate fills to fit the style of music they are playing.

Different styles of finger picking and strumming can create a vast range of moods for guitar accompaniment.

Singers often have to sing in character, especially if they are performing a song from a musical or opera. Performing as a character can help the singer give across the emotions of a song more effectively.
