• kicking the ball out of play if a player becomes injured during a football match
• clapping when a goal is scored in netball

Positive impact

A golfer is playing a shot in the bunker. The rule is the club must not touch the sand until the actual full stroke is played. As the player was setting the club behind the ball before the shot he touched the sand with the bottom of the club. He immediately admitted the mistake and called a one shot penalty to his score.

This honesty was well recognized by the crowd who applauded his sportsmanship.

This good etiquette ensured the golfer had a good reputation in future competitions.

At the end of the rugby match the players who had been very competitive and physical in the match made sure they shook every opponents’ hand and congratulated them. The teams applauded each other off the pitch as well.

This good sportsmanship was important to both teams’ reputation as well as each player and very important to uphold the traditions of rugby.

As a result both teams and their fans are likely to treat each other with respect in future matches.

Negative impact

A badminton player gets very annoyed with their performance and begins shouting and complaining about a lot of decisions. The umpire warns the player about the behaviour on court.

A couple of points later the player bangs their racket into the ground in frustration at losing a point.

The umpire awards the opponent the next point due to a court violation, putting the player further behind.

A player in the netball team is so upset and annoyed that her team has lost a game that she refuses to shake hands with the opponents and immediately walked off the court.

In the next match the crowd boo and jeer every time the player gets the ball.

This pressure from the crowd makes the player have a much poorer performance and she is subbed out of the game.
