Developing and refining ideas
During the creating stages of the performance, the focus will be on developing and refining the piece, documenting changes as they occur. Key moments can be explained further in the portfolioA collection of your work, completed over the duration of your studies. or devising logAn account that documents and analyses the creative process of creating a piece of drama.. For example, where there was a clear process and change:
- explain the problem briefly
- identify the technique or feature used to solve it
- show the positive impact of the change
Within this there should be an example of personal contribution, identifying the specific role taken and which ideas the individual came up with. As the drama progresses, refer back to the original aims and intentions and what needs to happen to ensure that they are fulfilled. It could be that the aims need to change, but this should not be altered at the start of the log. The change should be documented along with the need to adapt as it is a creative process and elements will organically change and develop.
Gathering and responding to feedback
When rehearsalThe process of preparing a production and getting it ready for performance., whether as performers or designers, how feedback has been used to progress and develop the piece further should be explained. The log needs to document how members responded to feedback and used it to refine the piece of drama. It can be useful to perform a section to gather feedback.
- Was the aim clear?
- What could be done to improve it?
Health and safety considerations
Everyone needs to show an awareness of health and safety considerations. Consider the potential risks of the chosen specialism, to the performers, crew and audience, and document what has been put in place to prevent this risk. Design changes may be made to fulfil the higher priority of health and safety and these should be documented as specific examples, using technical vocabulary to show understanding.
Audience response and impact
It is very important to demonstrate the rehearsal progression and how the performance has been edited and adapted as a result of new ideas.
- Were changes made to improve engagement?
- How will the audience respond to the piece?
- Is this in line with the aims?
Ensure that at least one example of development considers audience responseHow the audience respond in the moment, eg laughing, gasping or sitting silently engaged. and audience impactThe lasting thoughts or questions triggered for an audience, ie are they still thinking about the piece three hours later, three days later or three months later?.
