Within Islam, there are compulsory duties that Muslims must try to carry out. All Muslims follow the Five Pillars of Islam. For Sunni Muslims, the Five Pillars are the core duties of Islam. ’a Muslims follow the Five Pillars plus five additional duties, and together these are called the Ten Obligatory Acts.

Ashura

For Muslims, is a major religious commemoration of the martyrdom of Husayn, Ali’s son and a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. It falls on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

’a Muslims all over the world mark the festival with a voluntary day of fasting. As well as commemorating the death of Husayn in battle, Muslims remember the day left the Ark and the day Musa was saved from the Egyptians by God.

The ten days before the festival are a period of mourning. On Ashura, many Muslims wear black and there are often parades through the streets. Plays re-enacting the death of Husayn are often performed to remind Muslims of the events that led to his death.
