The ambitions of the Bruces

Robert the Bruce was the grandson of the Bruce who had been a Competitor in the Great Cause of 1291-1292.

Robert was not satisfied with the role of a noble and set his sights on using his grandfather's claim to take the Scottish crown.

Bruce has often been viewed in a negative light by historians, especially when compared to William Wallace. He has been accused of being an opportunist, rather than a patriot. However, other historians support Bruce and argue that it is unfair to judge him against Wallace.

Either way, Robert the Bruce was undoubtedly a fiercely determined man. His commitment and drive would eventually gain him crown of Scotland and an independent Scotland.
