Impact of delay on performance

This factor is concerned with performer(s) slowing down the pace of a performance in order to wait for support from others.

It is mainly used in such as basketball, handball and football. Delaying the play can be used in both offensive and defensive situations and is often influenced by being aware of what is around you.

For example, the position of centre back in handball is crucial to delaying opposition . In transitions, when opponents attempt to fast break, they often create overloads of two versus one:

  • The centre back in handball will usually try to delay the attack as they know they are outnumbered.
  • They do this by dropping deeper between the two opposition players in the hope that it slows the ball carrier down as they try to decide what to do.
  • In these seconds of delaying the opposition, it is often noted that the defender's teammates get back in time to support and stifle the fast break.
