What to expect in year 3

Moving up to a new year group can be both exciting and scary for you and your child.

Each school will do things a little bit differently but here are some core areas of maths and English that your child will cover in year 3.

Year 3 is the first year of KS2. Find out what to expect this coming year.

Maths - Year 3

Place value

In year 3, your child will become accustomed to working with three-digit numbers.

They will learn the place value of numbers up to 1000.
Your child will order, compare and partition numbers to 1000.
They will also start to solve word problems using these skills.

Year 2 recap

Before your child starts year 3, it may be a good idea to recap some topics they covered last year.

Calculations

This year, your child will be learning lots of methods to make calculations and solve problems.

They will learn to add and subtract with two-digit and three digit numbers.
They will learn the multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
They will continue solve problems using these skills.

Year 2 recap

Before your child starts year 3, it may be a good idea to recap some topics they covered last year.

To help your child build and test their Maths skills, they can practise what they have learned in Maths so far and pick up some new skills with the Guardians of Mathematica game.

English - Year 3

Reading

This year, your child can expect to continue reading lots of different types of texts and practise their comprehension skills - how well they understand what is written.

They will learn how to find information in texts and summarise it.
They will be encouraged to read for pleasure and discuss their books.
Your child will read fiction and non-fiction texts.

Year 2 recap

Before your child starts year 3, it may be a good idea to recap some topics they covered last year.

Writing

In year 3, your child will write for longer periods of time and can enjoy creating their own stories.

Your child will write for different genres.
They will solidify their understanding of different word classes such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.
They will use a variety of punctuation marks in their writing.

Wellbeing

Starting a new school year can be overwhelming and tiring for your child.

Staying active, taking rests and being creative can all help your child's overall wellbeing.
