Piles of rice

Of all the people in all the world

Of all the people in all the world

Internationally acclaimed show Of All The People In All The World will be returning to Birmingham, when the entire population of the world will be represented using 112 tonnes of rice, each grain representing a single person.

Birmingham-based theatre group Stan’s Cafe will be presenting the UK premiere of the 'World' version of their show, opening exclusively as part of ArtsFest on 12-14 September 2008.Μύ Every individual on the planet will be represented by a single grain of rice – now over 6.7 billion.

Grains of truth

Conceived by Artistic Director James Yarker, the performance straddles the line between theatre and art, presenting a hauntingly beautiful and constantly shifting landscape of rice.Μύ The show captures the sheer vastness of the population, bringing to life previously incomprehensible statistics to tell a visceral story of the world's people, politics, history and current affairs.

Be shocked, amazed and amused

Witty and shocking

Performers in lab coats will be meticulously weighing out rice onto sheets of white paper to show surprising juxtapositions from the shocking and thought provoking to the celebratory, witty and bizarre.Μύ Examples include the number of millionaires in the world next to the number of refugees (surprisingly similar), and those who went down on the Titanic compared with those involved in making the film Titanic.

The show was first performed as a 'UK' version in Coventry in 2003, when the entire population of Britain was represented using one tonne of rice.Μύ The show has now been seen all over the world in many different versions - the population of different countries, different cities, of Europe and of the Americas.Μύ The largest 'World' version of the show, then needing 104 tonnes of rice, has only been presented once before in Stuttgart in 2005.
