Hip hop at the Custard Factory

The cream of Birmingham’s vibrant underground hip hop scene is set to take over the Custard Factory stage at this year’s ArtsFest, when for the festival dedicates a whole day to hip hop.

On Saturday 13 September 2008 the Custard Factory stage will feature some of the scene’s most talented vocalists, MCs, producers and DJs including Madman the Greatest from the Playaz Cliq label and DJ Mylz, founder of the award-winning Heducation club nights and events.

Loyalty

Birmingham’s ground-breaking hip hop scene is promoted mainly through the support of local community radio stations and word of mouth.Ìý Many of the artists are unsigned and independently produced and financed with a small but loyal following.

Madman

Madman has recently been gaining notoriety for a series of underground remixes of classic hits including Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel which have been made available exclusively on-line through file sharing websites.Ìý

This particular remix has also polarised opinion with viewers on YouTube where it has been described as ‘one of the best remixes to hit the industry in 10 years’.

Promoting local talent

Cllr Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture said: "Through ArtsFest Birmingham City Council is proud to promote our local talent by making them a vital part of the UK’s biggest free arts festival."
