Spanking New began when the schedulers at Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ7 wondered if there might be a way to get together some new stand-up comedy to go alongside their programmes by established acts like Eddie Izzard and Billy Connolly in Monday night's Comedy Zone.

Three new producers were charged with finding the acts and producing the show. The form of the program was to be seven shows, each one an hour long, with four new acts and a compère per show.

The producers chose Robin Ince as compère because he’s experienced but not as well known as he should be, especially for a star of TV’s The Office (series one, episode five, scenes 3-4). They’ve also heard the pilot he did with Ross Noble at Glastonbury, and it’s hilarious. Also, he works for fruit pastilles.

If you are not familiar with the London comedy circuit, this is how bad it can be. Imagine a pub. Remove all the people except for five. Three of these people will be performing. (As new acts tend to rely on audience participation a lot, you will thus be asked where you are from twice, what you do three times, and will be abused four times.)

While scouting for the show, the producers estimate they’ve seen about 250 different acts, the 28 best of which you can hear on the show.

The show was recorded over 7 weeks at the Drill Hall theatre, in Soho. They tried to get a mix of voices across each show: male/female, northern/southern, relaxed/anxious. Mostly, they succeeded. Each show recorded at approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. This was due to Mr Ince being unable to see the green light which means "you've done enough now". You will hear the funniest 58 minutes of each recording in the broadcast...

The Broadcast Assistant was Jolanta Zbucki (except on show 4, where it was Charlotte Davies) and the Studio Managers (responsible for the sound) were Alick Hale-Munro, who has a beard, and Jill Abram, who doesn’t.
