1961

  • Radio: Mrs. Dale's Diary (Light Programme, now Radio 4) was the first radio soap to include a regular role for a black actor with Jamaican Charles Hyatt as Dr Lionel Smithson.

1968

  • Eldorado West One is aired on Radio 4 - it's a series of plays about a group of expatriate West Indians in London with Horace James and Rudolph Walker. Written by the highly regarded Trinidadian novelist Samuel Selvon, it's an adaptation of his famously funny novel, the Lonely Londoners ('56).

1990

  • In Jamaica, the first radio station devoted to playing local music begins broadcasting. Irie FM becomes the Island's most listened to station ever.

1994

  • Tim Westwood joins Radio 1, marking the first ever weekly national hip hop show.
