Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He had been held in South Africa for 27 years after being convicted of treason in 1964.

His release followed the relaxation of apartheid laws. Mandela appeared at prison gates with his wife Winnie. Across the country people danced in the streets, while 50,000 clamoured to see him at a rally in Cape Town. The world celebrated alongside them.
