Competition Rules

  1. You are asked to write a radio play of about sixty minutes on any subject of your choice. The play should have a maximum of six central characters.
  2. The play must be the original, unpublished work of the person submitting it. It must not have been previously produced in any medium.
  3. The contest is open to any writer who is not normally a resident of the United Kingdom.
  4. No individual may submit more than one play.
  5. The play must be written substantially or entirely in English. As well as being broadcast, the winning entry may be considered for future publication.
  6. Each entrant will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation in the 2001 Playwriting Competition. No further correspondence can be entered into.
  7. The play entered in the competition must not, at the time it is submitted, be offer for publication or broadcasting in any other form or medium, and competitors will be deemed to have entered into an undertaking not to accept offers for their entries from other broadcasters or publishers before December 31 2001.
  8. The decision of the judging panel is final and incontestable.
  9. No manuscripts will be returned by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.
  10. In respect of the winning entry, subject to a satisfactory recording being made, the winning play will be broadcast on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ World Service in November 2001. No fee will be payable other than the Β£2500 offered as prize money for one broadcast cycle on World Service. If repeated on the World Service a fee of 50% of Β£2500 will be payable for the first repeat cycle and thereafter, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will be entitled to broadcasting and other rights on the terms of the applicable Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Drama contract.
  11. In respect of all other entries, the entering of any play for competition shall constitute a grant to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ of broadcasting rights in the play on the terms of the applicable Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Drama commissioning contract.
  12. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and British Council reserve the right to withhold prizes in whole or part if, in the opinion of the judges, the standard of entries so warrants.
  13. It is a condition of the entry that entrants warrant that their work contains no defamatory matter (provided, however, that they shall not be liable for any defamatory matter which in the opinion of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ was included in the script without negligence or malice on their part), also that it does not contain any quotation from copyright material without appropriate permission having been obtained.
  14. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and British Council may consider arranging for the publication of a book containing some of the plays entered in the competition. To make this possible, it is desirable that writers retain their publishing copyright until December 31 2001.
  15. All plays must be submitted by April 30th 2001. The announcement of the winning plays will be made on September 30th 2001.
  16. The overall winning play will be recorded mid October 2001, and the winning playwright will be invited to attend the production process.
  17. Please return your entries and questionnaires to: Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ World Service Drama Playwriting Competition, Room 636, Broadcasting House, London W1A 1AA, UK, or to your local British Council office. We regret that for technical reasons, plays must not be sent by e-mail.
