The first half of March has been a washout for many places, especially in the south where we've already seen more than the average rainfall expected for the whole of the month.

So it's no wonder that a lot of people are crossing their fingers for a window of drier weather and perhaps a glimpse of sunshine.

It's set to be a chilly start to the weekend. A frost is expected first thing on Saturday across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. There could be a few mist and fog patches first thing too.

Early cloud and showery rain in the south-west will spread north-eastwards through the day, however, eastern parts of England and Scotland have the best chances of holding on to some sunshine for longest.

Temperatures will be a touch down on recent days at around 8C to 13C for most.

Sunday will start on a milder note with some mist, low cloud and outbreaks of rain, especially in the south-east. But it will be an improving day for most, as early rain clears eastwards to leave sunny spells.

It won't be completely dry though as further showers will move in at times, most frequent in the north and west. When the sun does come out though it will feel warmer, with highs between 13C and 16C.

As we head through next week there will be further spells of rain at times but it looks likely that the wettest weather will be focused in the north and north-west of the UK.

Computer-generated forecast models show higher pressure developing towards the south which should bring a much-needed spell of quieter spring weather, so you may be able to leave the brolly at home at least for a few days.
