Were you in the Brownies or the Guides when you were little? I was a Brownie, myself, a very proud little girl in the sixth Hebburn pack.

I have very fond memories of being a Brownie Guide, wearing my lovely little brown dress, working really hard to obtain various badges and, after a few years, being promoted to β€œsixer” of the imps … happy day!

It’s good to see that being part of a Brownie, Rainbow or Guide group is still as popular as ever.

Great fun!

You may not know, however, that Girlguiding UK is actually the UK’s largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women, and they rely on volunteers to run the different guide groups and help out with their activities.

There is such a shortage of volunteers at the moment, that there is a waiting list of over 50,000 young girls who cannot be placed in a Brownie or Guide group because there simply aren’t enough leaders.

Volunteers can get involved in a whole range of activities – from helping out at your local brownie or guide group, perhaps encouraging the children to achieve their interest badges (with names like the β€œBookworm Badge,” β€œthe Circus Performer Badge” and the β€œFriends to Animals badge” it’s bound to be fun, and interesting!) to simply coming along to specific events to help keep an eye on things and make sure that the Brownies and guides are having a great time!

"There is a waiting list of over 50,000 young girls who cannot be placed in a Brownie or Guide group because there simply aren’t enough leaders. "

It’s a fantastic way to volunteer, especially if you, like me, were a brownie once yourself! Any amount of time that you can afford can make a difference to the organisation. And it’s not just women who get involved – we want to hear from men too!

If you’d like to find out more about becoming a Brownie or Guide volunteer, get in touch with the Action Desk.
