1993: 'I survived WW1 but Spanish Flu nearly killed me'

The day after armistice, I was at death's door.

As World War One entered its final stages, soldiers who had survived the trenches faced a deadly new enemy: the virus known as Spanish Flu.

The virus is estimated to have killed more than 50 million of the 500 million people it infected, including 228,000 in the UK.

Born in 1898, David Taylor had joined the Army to find work and escape poverty. When peace finally arrived on 11 November 1918, the pandemic meant he was in no fit state to enjoy the celebrations.
