Cole and Solano tussle
Newcastle clawed back a draw

Newcastle 2-2 West Ham

By Malcolm Thompson
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Newcastle's Clarky and Wilko competition winner gives his verdict on the two-all draw between United and The Hammers.

Newcastle United 2-2 West Ham, St James' Park, Saturday 20 January 2007

Those expecting immediate response to Wednesday's B Movie were to be sadly disappointed in the first half.

You would not think that West Ham had not scored an away goal for over 900 minutes as they went two up inside 23 minutes.

My wife, who had not been to a game for almost 20 years, commented that every time Newcastle got the ball, they had no idea what to do with it! Another wag suggested that they should teach passing at the Academy.

Work to do

Things did improve for Newcastle as the half went on with a shot from O'Brien hitting the post and Butt bringing a fine save from Carroll.

In first-half injury time, Milner got Newcastle back into the game with a goal that some might say was offside, but the ever unpredictable Mr Rennie ruled as ok.

The half time pep talk seemed to work and a much more positive approach resulted in a penalty, and Solano tied the game.

West Ham then thought they had regained the lead, but Davenport's header was disallowed.

Newcastle pressed on and Dyer hit the post from a deflected Solano cross. Newcastle survived a scare when Etherington wasted an opportunity before Martins brought another fine save out of Carroll with a sharp turn and shot.

Still work to do for both teams!
