Hanging out the laundry is a great part of your routine for involving toddlers and teaching them new words.

If they say a word or short phrase, repeat what they say and add a word or two. This will show that you’ve understood them and helps them learn to build sentences.

Watch how the mum in this film builds words and phrases around the things her daughter says.

How adding words helps children to learn

It helps them to:

  • Know they have shared their ideas with you
  • Learn new words
  • Learn how to make their sentences longer

Follow your child's lead when it comes to talking about different items of clothing. See what they're interested in and if they're able to name them.

If they do name them, build phrases around them. For example if they say 'sock' you could say 'that's daddy's fluffy sock'.
