Getting out to the park can be a great learning opportunity for your little one.

If they say a word or short phrase, repeat what they say and add a word or two. This will show them that you’ve understood them and it helps them learn to build sentences.

Watch how dad listens to the words his daughter says and adds new words to them to show her how they can be used in phrases.

How adding words helps children to learn

It helps them to:

  • Know they have shared their ideas with you
  • Learn new words
  • Learn how to make their sentences longer

When you're out and about with your child, there are so many things that may catch their eye or ear. If they name something, try to repeat the word back to them in a phrase to show them how to build longer phrases. So for example, if they say 'duck', you could say 'the duck goes quack, quack'.
