How following your child's lead helps them learn

It helps them to:

  • Learn the words for things that interest them
  • Learn to link the words they hear to their meanings

Using a texture book will help your child get to know what words like 'sticky', 'prickly', 'silky' and 'fluffy' actually feel like against their skin, even if they’re not able to verbally communicate what they’re experiencing, liking or disliking yet. As they choose different items and feel them, name them and describe them to them using the words for textures.
