How describing what they're interested in helps your child

It helps them to:

  • Hear the language they will need to talk about what interests them. This will help them learn words more quickly
  • Link the words they hear to what’s happening and understand their meanings

Chatting during an everyday activity like sorting laundry is a great opportunity to expand your toddler's vocabulary.

Chat about who each item belongs to and talk about the different textures and colours. Describing each item can help your child understand how words go together to form sentences.
