Learning to talk isn't just about your baby being able to put words together with the things they see. It's important that they make connections with the things they hear too.

How to play where's that sound?

  • Next time a sound catches your baby's attention, point it out and name the thing that makes it. For example, "Can you hear the plane? Look there it is!"
  • Listen to the different sounds you hear in your home and outside. In your garden or the local park, you could listen to the dogs barking, the birds singing, or the leaves rustling on the trees.
  • Listening to sounds in the street is also a great learning experience for a baby. Be sure to point out the honking of car horns, the revving of engines, or the sounds of other children chatting with their families.
  • To make things extra fun, you could even try making the sounds of the things you are listening to - this is sure to bring a smile to your little one's face!

The benefits of naming sounds for your baby

  • Identifying and naming sounds with your little one is a great way to stimulate their senses while teaching them new words.
  • Babies love to listen to sounds, and if you add in some funny impressions of those sounds, such as a cat meowing or a duck quacking, your little one can begin to understand the meaning or thing behind a certain sound.
  • You could go a step further and add a sense of emotion to your naming of sounds. For example, if you hear a dog barking a lot, you could say, 'Ooh, that dog doesn't sound very happy, does he? He keeps saying woof woof because he's hungry." By explaining why the animal is making the sound, you will help your little one begin matching feelings with sounds.
