When you ask your child questions, they may not always have the answers at this stage. Sometimes it's better to describe what they're doing, so they can learn the words that link to their actions.

Watch as this mum talks her daughter through getting ready, without asking too many questions.

How asking fewer questions and describing actions helps children to learn

It helps them to:

  • Enjoy chatting without the pressure of lots of questions
  • Link your words to their actions and learn new words more quickly
  • Learn the language they need to talk about what they’re doing

There are loads of opportunities to introduce language into this part of your routine. The more words your toddler hears, the bigger their understanding of the process will be.

Take time to name the clothes that your child is wearing and talk about the body parts they go on. Let them choose which clothes or shoes they want to wear and describe them.
