Make the most of singing There Were Three in the Bed

This nursery rhyme can be sung quickly, to engage and excite babies or children. But it can also be sung slowly like a lullaby.

Touching babies while you're singing with them helps to keep them engaged and can soothe them if you're singing them to sleep.

Keep eye contact while you're singing, especially with newborns. This allows them to focus on your face and mouth movements and helps them develop their early understanding of language.

Older children can act out the lyrics of the song by lying on the floor and rolling away for each verse.

It's also a great way to teach early counting skills. Stop after each verse and see if your child can tell you how many people are left in the bed. You could use your fingers to help them count.

You can choose how many people start in the bed. This rhyme is also often called Ten in the Bed, which is a bit of a longer song.

There Were Three in the Bed Lyrics

There were three in the bed

And the little one said, "Roll over, roll over"

So they all rolled over and one fell out

There were two in the bed

And the little one said, "Roll over, roll over"

So they all rolled over and one fell out

There was one in the bed

And the little one said, "Goodnight"
