Looking out of the window with your child can provide lots of things to chat about.

If they say a word or short phrase, repeat what they say and add a word or two. This will show that you’ve understood them and helps them learn to build sentences.

Watch the video below to see how this dad adds words when looking out of the window with his daughter.

How adding words helps children to learn

It helps them to:

  • Know they have shared their ideas with you
  • Learn new words
  • Learn how to make their sentences longer

There are so many interesting things to spot and chat about when you look out of the window.

See what things they can spot out of the window - ask them, 'what can you see?'

If they name something they see, or say a few words about it, try adding a word or two, then build that out into a full sentence for them. For example, if they say 'postman', you could say, 'Yes, it's the postman. The postman bringing our letters.'
