How this helps

Sock puppets can be really useful props to help children develop their imagination.

Using sock puppet characters with actions and expressions can help you talk and play imaginatively with your child. This will help to keep them engaged in play and build their listening skills.

Instructions for parents/carers

  • Give the sock puppet a name - introduce them to your child and speak to them as the puppet character.

  • Use expressive voices for your characters and describe what they're doing - 'Sammy the Sock is tickling your toes!'

  • Let your child lead - pause and wait for them to respond to the character when you make it 'speak' to them. Try letting them decide what the character does next.

  • Ask simple questions like 'What does Sammy the Sock like to eat?'

  • See printable handouts for this activity below.

Chat with parents/carers

Here are some questions you might ask them:

• What did you notice?

• What did you like about your child’s reaction?

• How might you do something like this at home?

Pretend role play can open up conversations with your child. Ask them who they'd like to be or what role they'd like you to play!

Try introducing a sock puppet during Storytime – it will help bring the story to life.

You could also try playing different games with socks whilst doing the laundry – take a look at the pairing socks activity.
