When you describe what your child is doing, you're helping them link the words they hear to their actions. This can be a great way of building learning into daily routines.

Watch how mum helps her daughter learn new words as she gets ready.

How describing actions can help your child

It helps them to:

  • Hear the words they will need to talk about what interests them. This will help them learn words more quickly
  • Link the words they hear to what’s happening and understand their meanings

Getting dressed is an easy way to build some language learning into their daily routine as it's something you do together every day.

Name the items of clothing they're putting on and where they go on their body e.g. 'gloves, they go on your hands'.

Repeating phrases like 'socks on' helps to build their understanding of simple phrases.
