Remembering the Battle of the Somme
This Live Lesson commemorates the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in one of the most significant battles in history.
Fought between July and November 1916, the Battle of the Somme was one of the defining moments of the First World War.
We revisit the history of the battle and its impact on the Great War, and delve into the texts of Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon to find out how their works helped tell the story of life on the front line.
Content is linked to Key Stage 3/ 3rd Level English and History curricula, and features interactive activities led by award-winning poet Paul Farley, reports from historian and presenter Dan Snow and performances by War Horse actor Lee Armstrong.
This edited programme, presented by Lucy Siegle from The One Show and C鶹Լ’s Ben Shires was first streamed live to schools in June 2016. Please note that we are no longer reviewing emails and messages from schools for inclusion in the lesson.
