Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ

Our Three Pillars

As a responsible business, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ takes its duty to the environment and respect for the planet seriously, which is why we are committed to becoming Net Zero and Nature Positive. Our sustainability strategy is underpinned by scientific rigour to meet the highest standards of accountability. To deliver our objectives and support the wider media sector, we are working collaboratively with suppliers and creative peers, across the UK and beyond, to develop a sustainable industry on and off-screen.

One of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s core purposes is providing clarity on matters of fundamental public importance. On the unique, universal subjects of climate change and biodiversity loss, it is our mission to inform, educate and inspire through our content and programming.

We know we have to match our unrivalled, international reputation for bringing the natural world and environmental content to audiences with the care we take to reduce our environmental impacts off-screen.

To that end, we’ve been at the forefront of sustainable television production for many years - developing the industry’s albert carbon calculator and sustainable production certification scheme, now used in 31 countries – to both measure and then mitigate our environmental impacts.

Our approach ensures that all our output provides accurate environmental information and compelling storytelling that bring the topics to life, for all our audiences – whoever and wherever they are.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is a signatory of the Climate Content Pledge and co-founder of the Journalism Climate Commitment, which demonstrates our commitment to output that is relevant, evidenced by the latest science and remains impartial. We pursue the truth without campaigning, in accordance with the .

We want to be a net positive company, giving back more to the planet than we take out, and the first step is to get to Net Zero across all our operations and supply chains, dramatically reducing our carbon emissions and absorbing what’s left.

Here's how we intend to do deliver upon our three Sustainability pillars

  • Nature Positive: Managing our impact on nature to do more good than harm to our planet
  • Net Zero: Credible strategy with clear targets to cut our carbon footprint underpinned by science
  • People Positive: Inform, educate and inspire on climate. Signatories to the climate content pledge. Measuring the impact from our content - 'our brain print'

These pillars guide all our activities – from the way we make programmes, to how we manage our buildings and to how we engage with our suppliers and partners.

See the Our Plan tab for more details on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Net Zero targets.

In the words of Sir David Attenborough at The Earthshot Prize in 2021:

We need to do this now, and over the next ten years.
