Student triumph over metal

The 2007 BurySOUND battle of the bands competition came to an end with the final on 2 November. The Bury St Edmunds Corn Exchange had sold-out yet again and the winners were both the judges' and the punters' choice.

I arrived at the the Corn Exchange just in time to hear what seemed like Beatlemania-style screaming as THEE VICARS took to the stage.Μύ The four piece come on like a cross between The Hives and The Jam with their matching black and white dress.

The music is raw rock & roll shot through with a punk and garage band aesthetic. The band say their influences range from classic 50s rockers like Little Richard to modern revivalists such as The Mummies and Billy Childish.

The King Edward VI pupils have only been going for 6 months and gigging for a mere 3 and they already possess a manic energy on stage. But then one would hope that would be the case if you were aged between 15 and 17.

Thee Vicars

The riffs reminded me of The Clash's first album. They'll need to develop a sound which is more than the sum of their influences if they're to stand out from the crowd, but they seemed to have struck the right chord with the crowd even at such an early stage of their existence.

Next up were STUDENT, which I can't help feeling is the worst name for a band since Kitchens Of Distinction. They opened with a cover of the Arctic Monkeys' Dancefloor, which seemed like a cheap attempt to get the crowd on their side when they should be trying to impress us with their own material.

However, the ploy worked and the rest of the set showcased a wider range of styles - subtler instrumentals and singer Toby ending the set on his own. Interestingly, considering the audience was split 50-50 boy/girl, Student's bassist Hanna was the only lady on stage this evening. Does that mean rock is still a predominantly male preserve? Why aren't Bury's female population joining or forming bands? That could be much more interesting...

Third on were PERSEVERE who started with a speech. I feared the worst, but it was merely to inform us that their usual singer Chris Knox wasn't with them tonight, so guitarist Alec Jarman was stepping up to the plate.

If he was nervous, it didn't show and he proved to have a natural ease with the crowd and got them onside immediately. They believe in metal and all that entails - chugging riffs with unintelligible, deep throat vocals, but also subtler guitar work and even a didgeridoo intro!

The sound on the night seemed to muddy the guitar solos so it was quite hard to hear just how good Alec's guitar work was - and these things are obviously important in the world of metal.

Persevere

The band got the best reaction from the crowd who willingly took part in the 'wall of death' (think two lines of maniacs throwing themselves at each other in a fashion which would constitute GBH if it had happened in the street outside).

The final band on were HIGH 5's ALL ROUND - singer and guitarist Ben Brown has an excellent line in staring-out the audience and they pump out a punk style thrash along the lines of Green Day or S*M*A*S*H. As with Thee Vicars, they riff along energetically, but seem to need a little bit more to give them a sound that they can call their own.

While the judges were making their decision, last year's winners Four Kicks returned to the stage and did their traditional heavy blues rock thing with the extraordinary wailing vocals of Lloyd Whitaker.

Then it was the moment we'd been waiting for, and the judges and the audience plumped for Student. They were probably the pick of the bunch - whereas the other three bands seemed to tread well-worn paths I got the sense that Student were at least trying to do something slightly different although still well within the boundaries you'd expect of a white, British indie band.

All the bands are either in their teens or barely out of them, so time is on their side. Β£500 of equipment, 500 CD pressings and a recording session at West Suffolk College will give the winners a chance to hone and develop their sound.

The BurySOUND competition proves that the local scene is still thriving. Bands are constantly forming and eventually one with that little extra something should break out and catch the national attention.

Just stumbled across this old old gem, don't see what the fuss is all about, the guy was old! x
Oli ((student))

The reviewers giving a review of his opinion. What really counts are the judges comments as these are emant to illustrae points and help you out. Being told that the halls the wrong shape for the sound of music you play by a judge, to me, is not the bands fault and a pointless comment. Out of the four in the round and five in the final i had 1-1/2 useful feedback from the judges. Being told you've heard it all before doesn't help...one judge calling your drummer a machine another saying that he is terrible. been goin all these years and not a single metal band winning!!! Methods of Punishment...Nitch...all robbed!
Alec

Tbh, Student did deserve to win. And if you're gonna write a review that is expected to be respected, then at least get the band members names correct!
Fittie Mcvitie

students bassist's name is actually hannah... i think the comments are far too harsh, i think whoever wrote this review needs to talk to other teens, and find out if they think this review is fair! And i think student is a awsome name for the band
kenzi

Welcome to reality...if they can't handle the review at this age what they gonna do when they're older...cry?!?He gave his honest opinion and is a damn sight better review than what the actual event gave the bands. I was there...4 kicks didn't play indie...they played they're zeppelin-style rock as always...
Alec

Seems like fair comment to me... aren't some of you being a little over sensitive? It seems as though you've not read the review very carefully... just picked over it to be offended... Surely it's better to take the bands seriously than patronise them with a 'not bad for kids' attitude... (by the way I think we say discouraging rather than un-encouraging, don't we?).. Also I'm puzzled as to why arriving just in time to the gig is, itself, puzzling. If these bands can't take criticism now they're in for a shock sooner or later - I thought the comments were fair and constructive... If I'm wrong tell me why...
Bill

Well aggree with Charlie there!Arriving late and giving a poor review...not a good day!
Harry

from what i heard the four kicks didn't actually play any 'heavy blues rock' they played more cool indie rock i thought this year.. and also arriving 'just in time' to an event you are supposed to be reviewing is quite frankly puzzling
charlie

Honestly, who does the reviewe think he is?!First of all, this is a LOCAL event, not Reading, not Glastonbury, a LOCAL event. These bands are at such a young age and to have that sort of criticism is so un-encouraging and quite pathetic on your behalf. These bands have obviously practiced and worked so hard to get where they are...and for what? This reviewer to tell them their names are rubbish, their music 'a ploy' ( I mean seriously, unless your Jo Whiley, don't expect them to want to work a 'cheap trick' impress you that much.I mean, really, couldn't you have been more encouraging than critisizing? Just give this kids the chance they deserve.James.
James.

Re the above article, I think some of the comments are very harsh about young bands that are putting huge effort into their work. All bands had to do a cover - perhaps you are too old to have recognised the covers that the other bands did - would you rather Student did a rubbish one or a very good rendition of a popular track? A bit more encouragement from the older generation would be better than slating their efforts.
Chris
