The Beat goes on

Kevin Beattie joined Bob Shelley and Stephen Foster in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Suffolk studios for a frank and honest chat about his football career and the state of the modern game.

The Beat, widely regarded as one of the best players ever to pull on an Ipswich shirt, has released a second book - The Greatest Footballer England Never Had.

Although Beattie won nine caps for his country, many of the game's legends such as Sir Bobby Robson, Bobby Moore and Bill Shankly expected him to be a mainstay in the national side.

Sadly, terrible luck with injuries prevented Beattie from fulfilling his full potential - for both Ipswich and England.

In the audio clips below, The Beat gives an insight into the highs and lows of his career, including his matches for England, how he missed a trial with Liverpool, who he rates as the best players then and now, and who he thinks would win a match between Town's great side of the early 80's and modern day pace setters Manchester United.

i rate kevin alongside paul mcgrath as the two most naturally gifted defenders i have ever seen, and this from a man united die hard.

Kenny Sharpe
I was lucky enough to have been with Kevin as a young Ipswich Apprentice in the early 70's He was AWESOME then as a 16 year old amongst Ipswich Town's established star footballers of that era..

DAVE ROSHER
Bill shankley said he was a GIANT to the north standers he was GOD

Heather Rivett
I met Kevin when he first came to Ipswich and he has not changed a bit. Kevin was one of the greatest players around and through thick and thin he has remained loyal to Ipswich.

Gerry Daish
"Kevin Beattie walks on water!" The best player I ever saw. Enough said.

Jerry Dickinson
Quite simply the best player ever to wear a Town shirt. With all of the advances of football on television these days it makes you wonder how high his profile would have been had that Ipswich team of the 70's and 80's featured in such ways as Sky do now. Kevin would have been a household name.

Paul Draper
I met The Beat this Xmas at his autobiography signing. Lovely man, very warm. The book is a great read too.

neil broome
i had the pleasure of meeting kevin on a few occasions and he even came down to eastbourne and present winners medals to our under 16 football team.easily a top man and the best defender in his era.

Mark Butcher
Kevin Beattie was the best player I ever saw at Portman road in the late 70's and the early 80's.

Sue
You can buy a signed copy of his autobiography at the Spar shop on Woodbridge Road and a good read it is if you remember him in the Town Team as I do

Chris Connolly
I had the privilige to play alongside Keven.. even stayed in his house a few nights...fantastic character...always happy..genuine friend

Bruce Rush
A true icon and legend at Portman Road is the only way to describe Kevin Beattie. He also should have been one of Englands best and most capped captains.I have been watching the town for over thirty years and have yet to see anyone near him in defence and also attacking (including Ferdinand and others)LEGEND!

steve peggrem
yes so much better than those tarts that try to play for england they,re not even ood enough to have cleaned his boots

Bill Catton .
Kevin Beattie was undoubtably the best Town player ever. He was of course a product of his time and since those times are over we will never see his like again . Sad , but true .In that era players ( and fans ) were not distracted by material things as they are today .Pride in the club counted for much and pride in playing for the club seeped from his pores .

Duncan Pharaoh
Kevin Beattie was a formidable player and from what i hear a top man as well,(but)he comes a close secound to laurie sivell

Colin Mosedale
You always felt you had 12 in the side when Kev played. His timing in the air and his power and drive going forward were awesome. I can still see the posters saying "Kevin Beattie walks on water" at the Stamford Bridge Cup semi final replay against West ham.

Darren
Can anyone tell me if there is a shop in Ipswich where i can by his new autobiograpghy? (fink i spelt dat wrong)

Dave Reader
Kevin was not only a wonderful player but a lovely bloke - and always had time for his fans.

david o' flynn

HI. KEVIN WAS A GENUINE FRIEND AND PLAYER. A GOOD HONEST PERSON. MIXED WITH HIS SUPPORTERS AND ENJOYED GOOD JOKE. GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR,THEY WERE GOOD TIMES.

NIGEL TAYLOR
I WATCHED IPSWICH WITH MY DAD DURING THE MID TO LATE 70'S AND KEVIN BEATTIE WAS BY FAR THE BEST FOOTBALLER I HAVE EVER SEEN AND IVE NOT SEEN A BETTER ONE YET. I WOULD LOVE TO WATCH HIM PLAY AGAINST DROGBA OR RONALDO, AS HE WOULD HAVE THEM IN HIS POCKET.

Josie
Kevin was the best defender Ipswich Town have ever had along with Allan Hunter there was not much that got past them, its a shame that inujury finished such a promoising star, at least I have had the pleasure of watching him on many occassions, its a pity we do not have some one as good as him in our current team, but you nevery know perhaps one day we will have another Kevin Beattie

Barry Jiggins
Both Kevin Beattie and Allan Hunter were not only the Best defeders that Ipswich had they were the best The old Division 1 had

Brian
Beattie was magnificent but for me Mick Mills will always be my Town number 1.

Kat
Kevin was not only an excellent players and I am proud to have been around to see him play. How sad that his promising career was cruelly cut so short.

Pete Watson
Beattie and Allan Hunter were the best defenders we ever had at Ipswich. Both suffered injury problems, Beattie much more so. We'll never really repeat the glory years we had with those two in central defence. defense

John Bale
The best - on a par with the late Duncan Edwards.A master of every aspect of the game - goal scorer, strong and fearless defender, great header of the ball, could beat players. I've heard that some of these superstars can only kick with one foot! And that's all they can do! I'll always remember Duncan Edwards and Kevin Beattie. Many thanks for all you did for football - and PLEASE come back to do the weekly commentaries!

Shirley Osborne
Met him.. lovely bloke... one of the best players.. the youngsters of today could learn lots.. play for the game not the Β£

DALE OSBORNE
Yes Kevin Beattie was the best Ipswich player I ever see play, determination to win was immense.
