Angling for All

Woody's Lake in Barking has been made completely wheelchair accessible by the Suffolk Disabled Angling Forum, offering many people, who otherwise might be stuck indoors, the chance to get out and enjoy angling.

The lake in Barking has been named Woody's Lake in honour of Ian Wood, who has been the driving force behind the refurbishment.Μύ Despite being disabled himself, Ian has been involved at every stage of the planning and construction of the lake, which has been specifically designed to allow access for disabled anglers.

Kay Sutton, SDAF angler

There is now complete 360-degree access to the lake, with each peg (or fishing position) accessible to wheelchair users.Μύ The best thing about the lake in Barking is that there is no difficulty in getting to or from your position, and that the people who visit can therefore be completely independent - a feeling that they are often unused to in their everyday lives.

The lake also gives people who might otherwise be stuck indoors the chance to get out and interact with nature, to spend time with other people with similar interests, or simply to enjoy the scenery and the wildlife that is there in abundance.

"You know that you can do something yourself. Everybody that comes here has some disability so it just doesn't matter."

Kay Sutton, SDAF member

The benefits do not stop there either - as Ian Wood explains, "there is no reason why a disabled angler cannot take part in a mainstream angling competition".

Ian Wood was nominated for this year's Suffolk Sport Awards for his services to disabled sport, and it is clear to see why - the lake has opened up a huge new area of life and excitement for the people who use it and the Suffolk Disabled Angling Forum are always looking for new members - to get more information, click the link on the right hand side.
