Miss Black America

Miss Black America

Miss Black America have known good and bad times. They've won band contests, recorded sessions for Radio 1 and been reviewed by Q, NME and Rolling Stone but band members (and even little fingers) have come and gone.

The full MBA line-up is:

Laura Kidd - bass
Mathew Anthony - guitar/voice
Dan Smart - drums
Seymour Glass - voice/guitar

MBA formed in October 1999 in Bury St Edmunds, within two weeks they'd played their first gig and by August 2000 they were supporting The Dandy Warhols.

"They've achieved everything except finding a home at a major label. Their enigmatic, powerful sound deserves to be heard by so many more people."

Mini Review

Influenced by the Stone Roses and dEUS as well as the local drum and bass scene, they released their first EP in May 2001 and began recording the debut album, 'God Bless Miss Black America', in September of the same year.

Unfortunately it's first review in NME wasn't all that favourable, their record company went bust and the original line-up imploded.

However, successful sessions for John Peel helped front-man Seymour Glass to recruit new members and the band has since played with acts as diverse as The Libertines, Buzzcocks, Alabama 3 and Ms Dynamite.

They have continued to write and gig like crazy promoting their second album, 'Terminal', which was released in 2005 through new label Ruby Slippers Records, with the singles 'Dot Dot Dot' and 'Drowning By Numbers' winning coveted Single of the Week awards in the national press.

All of the band are also busy with side projects - Seymour is releasing his solo album in 2007.

Mat's new project is a duo called Baron Greenback, currently creating their first album in a bedroom and Laura's solo work is released under She Makes War.
