John Ottley, aged 6 months The Ottleys of Suffolk – an intriguing tale still to be unravelled!John Ottley John Ottley, one of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Suffolk's receptionists, has been seeking his forebears for some decades. He writes: Having read some decades ago that my family were living in the county in the 1200s (at Otley Manor, UffordΜύ and Netherhall Manor, Otley) I have been intrigued to find out more.  John's father, Bill Ottley I have yet to search the manorial records and other contemporary documentation – as to date I have been unable to devote the necessary time and energy into locating them. Even if I were able to find them, the documents would require translating from the Latin! Perhaps mine may turn out to be a story of riches to rags! At the moment I am working on the 1837 online.com site to find other missing relatives, so I might be able to trace cousins who might still be living in London and elsewhere.  Great Uncle William Ottley Amongst those from the branch living in East Suffolk are Robert de Ottley from Ufford who was Lord Mayor of London in 1433-34. Of those living in the west of the county, I have found two early 15th century wills of gentlemen from Little Saxham. My father was born in 1901 in Hessett, where his father and grandfather had lived since 1817.Μύ His Uncle William married and moved to Ingham. Before this the family were in Horringer (Horningsheath) – possibly employed on the Ickworth Estate.  John Ottley, aged 6 months They were all labouring folk, and I have traced the direct line to 1690. There are other referencesΜύ to the Ottleys during the 1500s and 1600s but as yet I have failed to link them all together. In recent months I have been researching some of my father's cousins who went to London seeking work in the early 1900s. By using the 1901 Census and 1837Online.com I am beginning to piece the story together – tracing the instances of births, marriages and deaths through the last century – in the hope that I shall be able to unearth some distant relatives who probably have no idea there is an old Suffolk native looking for them!
