John had been on Radio 1 since it went on air in 1967 and also presented 'Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Truths' on Radio 4.

Radio 1's controller Andy Parfitt said "John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death as are all who work at Radio 1. John's influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades and his contribution to modern music and music culture is immeasurable. He will be hugely missed."

Friends pay more tributes

Steve Harley, frontman of Cockney Rebel and friend of John's paid tribute to him saying "John Peel was first in a line of one. He belonged to one of those very special clubs, those that only have one member. His laconic, deadpan delivery concealed a raving passion for music and the people who make it. There was no other broadcaster like him, nor will there ever be again."

"He played very early Cockney Rebel tracks and helped kick-start my career and, years later, played demos by my youngest brother's band, giving them a more than useful boost. That band never actually made it, but many acts given the support of John Peel went all the way to the top. Heart attacks don't happen to people as cool as John Peel, do they?"

Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley, who presented coverage of the Glastonbury Festival with Peel, paid tribute to her colleague and close friend saying "John was simply one of my favourite men in the whole world. As a music fan and presenter he was simply an inspiration."

John was simply himself, he had no airs or graces he was in the studio the way he was outside it, radio one feels empty to me without him there he is irreplacable, i miss comin home and not just listening to his shows in general but also to find out who was in session that particular night, music was johns passion and his life, theres no doubt about that but he was unique, one i looked on as an uncle and was a true inspiration to me and millions of others god bless you john your memory lives on. r.i.p. xx

CALLEN [The Voice]
Theres a huge void left by JP and his pivotal role in popular music. He wasnt just another garden variety DJ but an important cog in the machinery that crated the magic! Sorely missed!CALLEN [The Voice]

John Peel proved that you can be true to yourself and be more successful and respected than the people who are trying to stop you being so individual! We can't replace him but we can carry the torch!

I first saw J at the Bath blues festival in 68. Seen him at about twenty Readings since. A witty guy. Very cleverly done John. Loved most of his music, (all of it in those early days,) but we dinosaurs can't change our spots or learn new tricks like you could. Still an old hippy/rocker/punk. Thanks for everything. You may have been bowled out down here but I expect to find you knocking up the centuries if I manage to get up there.
