Max Anderson sealed Dundee's win with a late strike
Dundee moved into the Scottish Championship promotion play-off places with a deserved win over Arbroath.
Arbroath could have taken the lead after Malachi Fagan-Walcott had fouled Jason Thomson but Michael McKenna's penalty was saved by Adam Legzdins.
The hosts took the lead in the second half with Danny Mullen heading in Paul McMullan's cross.
And another McMullan delivery was converted by Max Anderson late on to ensure Dundee moved up to fourth.
James McPake's side are two points behind Raith Rovers and ahead of Queen of the South on goal difference but Queens have played two games more than the three sides above them.
Second-bottom Arbroath are four points clear of Alloa Athletic and behind Ayr United and Inverness Caledonian Thistle on goal difference.
Dundee manager James McPake: "Delighted with the three points and the clean sheet. It has been a long time coming and we had to work hard for that. I'm also thrilled for young Max again so it has been a good afternoon and it is three points we needed."
Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: "You can't come to Dundee in a local derby and miss a penalty. They have won 2-0, all credit to them. Let's put it into perspective, it is Arbroath who are a part-time club against Dundee on their own ground. We knew we were going to be in a fight, every single game is going to be a fight."
