Dundee 1-0 Arbroath: Paul McGowan goal moves hosts up to sixth

  • Published

Dundee moved up to sixth in the Scottish Championship with a narrow win over Arbroath at Dens Park.

After Christie Elliot and Max Anderson had efforts saved, the home side broke the deadlock in some style when Paul McGowan ghosted by three players before curling in from 18 yards out.

Elliott's cross rebounded back off a post and Danny Mullen curled in a shot from distance just wide.

Arbroath spurned chances to level from Dale Hilson and Jason Thomson.

The victory was Dundee's first in four league games to stay within reach of the top half of the table. For Arbroath, they remain second bottom with no victories yet in the Championship.

Dundee manager James McPake: "For the first 45 minutes I thought we were really good. For the second 45 minutes we dug in we had to show a lot of character.

"The one frustrating thing is that we weren't clinical enough in front of goal in the first half, some fantastic chances and some fantastic saves, you have got to give credit to the goalkeeper but it would have been a lot more comfortable for me had we two or three up.

"It was a great goal, great movement Paul McGowan is a really clever player, I thought he was excellent today, they changed their shape in the second half to deal with him."

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell: "I keep telling everybody we have not got the surprise package with us this year, everybody respects us. From my own perspective I am reasonably happy we are getting all our players back, we have got two home games coming up and probably we could have sneaked a draw but I have no complaints.

"Last year we had a sensational season, our track record - so people keep telling me - in the last four years is the third best in Scotland defensively. That doesn't go down well with me, every manager we talk to now have all got great compliments about Arbroath's defensive qualities, but we are second bottom of the league. But I am a confident guy and I will get them fired up for next week."
