Carlisle United have signed defenders Gary Miller and Macaulay Gillesphey on free transfers.

Right-back Miller, 31, has agreed an initial one-year contract with the League Two club following his release by Plymouth Argyle.

Gillesphey, 22, returns to Carlisle on a two-year deal after leaving Premier League Newcastle United this summer.

"I want to make sure the signings we make are the right people for me and the club," boss John Sheridan

Miller was part of the Argyle side that won promotion from League Two in 2017 and has played 338 games.

Gillesphey, who can play at centre-back or left-back, initially joined the Cumbrians on a short-term loan in September 2015, which turned into a season-long stay.

He then made a further 36 appearances for Carlisle in 2016-17.
