Reading the bulletin

School Report 2008

On Thursday 13 March 2008, hundreds of schools across the country made the news for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ School Report. Helen Bailey went to Sheffield Springs Academy where they recorded a radio news bulletin.

The idea of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ School Report is to get young people creating their own news bulletin, reporting on issues which interest and affect them.

At 2pm on March 13, 2008 every school taking part recorded or published a radio, TV or online news bulletin which became accessible on the school's website at 4pm.

"I'm a Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ journalist, and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ mentors like myself worked in schools across the country.

"I went to Sheffield Springs Academy working with a group of Year 7's to create a news bulletin for radio.

"Yewlands School in Sheffield and Wombwell High School in Barnsley also took part.

"Over the last few weeks, the students have been building up to the day by learning about how the news is put together, what different roles are involved in the process of writing a news bulletin, and researching stories they want to report on. Different students covered different types of stories on the day.

"They also had the chance to come and have a look around Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Sheffield on Shoreham Street, and to meet some of the presenters.

"They all enjoyed the trip and tried to put presenter Rony Robinson off his programme by pulling faces at him - but Rony being the total professional was not put off!

"Sheffield Springs have just moved into a brand new building, and for School Report we were able to use their new recording studio to record their radio news bulletin.

"It was a great day - the students really enjoyed it and the bulletin sounds great! You can listen to Radio Springs by clicking on the link below."
