Now You Has Jazz, 1975-89

How did you come to work at Radio Sheffield?

I was there from 1975-89. Dave Treadway set me on following our meeting at the Radio Sheffield Day of Jazz at Doncaster racecourse in 1975. My band was there and we had various stars appearing with us like Nat Gonella and George Chisholm. I became the presenter of the weekly jazz programme 'Now You Has Jazz.' I also did a piece on the morning news programme called 'The Jazz Diary.' I was the only jazz presenter there and I started in 1975, leaving in 1989 when the evening broadcasting went regional.

What have you done since you were at Radio Sheffield?

I have stayed in South Yorkshire and always kept my job in the research labs of British Steel, as it was known then, until I retired in 2000. My Jubilee Jazz band is still going strong.

What was your proudest Radio Sheffield moment?

There were many proud moments because I had so many famous guests on the programme but the one I enjoyed most was a two hour Christmas programme in which Seb Coe talked about his love for jazz and how it soothed his life's low moments. He was at the peak of his running career then.

Another was when I asked my friend Pat Halcox (Chris Barber's trumpeter) to come along.ΜύWhen I arrived the entire Chris Barber Band was waiting in the studio. Chris had insisted!

Who was your favourite presenter?

The place was full of top people then, but Tony Capstick was at his funniest.

What do you do with your free time these days?

My favourite place is Millmoor Football Ground, Tivoli end! I don't have any free time after organising the band and trying to keep the wood that surrounds us from taking over house and garden, but watching the Millers is sacrosanct!
