Robert Jackson, father of the first ever football phone-in - Praise or Grumble - tells us about his time as Sport presenter at Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Sheffield.

:: Robert Jackson
Sports Reporter/Producer 1972-1992

How did you come to work for Radio Sheffield?Μύ

Having appeared occasionally on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Sheffield talking about 'best buys' from the Parkway Market, I was invited by the Sport Producer Mike Marsh to cover Rotherham United.

Since leaving, what have you done?

I've enjoyed retirement in Sheffield! I've chaired the trustees of the Sheffield Marathon, played bowls at Millhouses Park and travelled abroad to watch England try to play cricket.

What was your proudest moment at Radio Sheffield?Μύ

Inventing Praise or Grumble. I also did a memorable interview with Bert McGee when he retired as chairman of Sheffield Wednesday FC.ΜύHe said some controversial things about the Hillsborough disaster and the interview was used by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ network news.

"How would I sum up my time at Radio Sheffield? Brilliant. I got paid for watching sport!"

Robert Jackson

Do you have funny memories of your time there?Μύ

Getting my words muddled up with a story about Tony Currie. I was supposed to say that he'd passed a late fitness test, but I got the 'i' from 'fitness' mixed into the word 'passed', and the 'a' from 'passed' into 'fitness' if you can work that one out! I also managed to play the Dambusters March on air when we had German visitors in the building.

Who was your favourite presenter?

Dinah Maiden, she was crisp, clear and authoritative. Rony Robinson for his local knowledge, humour and wisdom.

How do you spend your free time?

Playing bowls, watching theatre, Sheffield United, watching cricket abroad, doing crosswords and watching Countdown. I've also been married to Mary for 51 years and have three children and eight grandchildren.

Looking back, how would you sum up your Radio Sheffield experience?

ΜύBrilliant.Μύ I got paid for watching sport!
