Shiny happy sculptures

Last Summer some aliens raided through Woodthorpe, you might have spotted some space-age shiny objects out of the corner of your eye. No, it's not something out of the Smash advert...

You've heard of Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Barnsley... well now, the Woodthorpe estate in Sheffield has its very own sculpture park!

Young people at Manor, Woodthorpe and Wybourn have been busy since June making dozens of stone, wood and scrap metal sculptures.

Racing car sculptures

They've been working with local sculptors at the Connexions Centre on Chadwick Road in Woodthorpe, to make statues out of everyday objects, from dustbins to colanders to fish slices.

They've even managed to incorporate old toilets, ironing boards and an electric organ into the scenes.

Facing Woodthorpe Road are sculptures of racing cars which look like they're made out of giant Meccano, while the lucky police who man the helicopter get a bird's eye view of a giant scorpion made out of wood and painted bright colours.

By the end of the project which runs throughout summer 2007, all the youth groups in the area will have made something for the sculpture park.

Samantha Hague, one of the youth workers, says the sculptures have made a great impact locally:

"Bus drivers stop nearly every day and say, 'What's all this Smash?' - you know, from the instant mash adverts!"

  • The sculptures can be seen in the grounds of Woodthorpe Connexions Centre between Chadwick Road and Woodthorpe Road in Sheffield, and they'll be there for the forseeable future.
