Background to the competition

Ravenseye by Chris Gilbert
Black ice looks almost unnatural

Why is it that we often photograph exotic wildlife we encounter on our travels, but more rarely take the time to record the environment we live in?

Wildlife Where I Live, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ South Yorkshire website category in Sheffield Wildlife Trust’s photo competition 2006, looked for photographs of urban and suburban wildlife.

We wanted you to show us the diversity of plants, animals and natural environments that exist where you live in South Yorkshire.

Great Tit by Richard Burkmar
Friendly tits are a favourite with photographers

Perhaps you have swallows nesting in your guttering or foxes visit your garden. Do you notice the pigeons and squirrels that are often to be found in town centres?

Some former industrial sites and patches of waste ground are being slowly colonised by nature without human intervention.Μύ Does that buddleia sprouting through the brickwork support any other life?

Urban wildlife can be welcome, like the salmon returning to the once polluted River Don near Doncaster, or unexpected like the escaped mink roaming its Sheffield banks.

A great shot is great wherever you take it.

Whatever you photograph, the Wildlife Where I Live photo competition looked for pictures that demonstrated a sense of place.Μύ
