Why has Chromecast stopped working on my device?

The �鶹Լ�� recently updated its Chromecast software to offer an improved and more robust service for our audience.

These changes mean that �鶹Լ�� Sounds will no longer work on some older devices. This is because those devices are currently running an unsupported version of the Google Chromecast firmware (the software that runs the �鶹Լ�� Chromecast feature).

Unfortunately, we cannot update our software to run on firmware that isn’t supported by Google.

�鶹Լ�� Sounds supports Chromecast on devices that are running Chromecast version 1.36 or above.

Devices that are affected include:

Cambridge Audio CXN V2
Kygo B9/800
Sony SRS-X99
Sony SRS-X77

If the firmware is updated by the manufacturer in future, Chromecast for �鶹Լ�� Sounds will be available again. In the meantime, some devices may be able to connect via AirPlay or Bluetooth.

Can I use �鶹Լ�� Sounds on my computer?

To access �鶹Լ�� Sounds on a computer or laptop, simply head to bbc.co.uk/sounds.

To use the �鶹Լ�� Sounds website, your computer or laptop will need to run a supported operating system. You'll also need to use one of our supported internet browsers.

Not sure what a browser is? It’s a piece of software installed on your computer that gives you access to websites.
Not sure what an operating system is? The operating system controls and manages the hardware and software on your computer. It’s the interface between you and your computer.

There is no �鶹Լ�� Sounds app for computers or laptops. Our �鶹Լ�� Sounds app is for mobiles, tablets and supported TVs only.

Browsers

We verify that �鶹Լ�� Sounds works in most browsers. However, we recommend the latest version of the following browsers for the full audience experience:

Due to the resources required to develop, test and support �鶹Լ�� Sounds for each individual browser currently available, and in the interest of delivering value for the licence fee, we only support the most popular browsers currently used. We'll continue to follow user trends and support the top browsers accordingly, as and when they change.

We recognise that some users may choose to use another browser, however, we cannot guarantee a problem-free �鶹Լ�� Sounds experience. As such, we may not be able to offer support to those using browsers or operating systems not listed here.

You can now listen to �鶹Լ�� Sounds directly from your entertainment system in some cars. While you can still use a mobile phone to access �鶹Լ�� Sounds in most cars via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, you can now listen to music, radio, and podcasts from the �鶹Լ�� directly from supported cars’ displays.

What cars can I install �鶹Լ�� Sounds in?

Currently, the following cars can install �鶹Լ�� Sounds for Android Automotive:

BMW 1 Series (2024 onwards)
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé (2025 onwards)
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (2024 onwards)
BMW X1/iX1 (2023 onwards)
BMW X2/iX2 (2024 onwards)
BMW X3 (2024 onwards)
All MINI models (2024 onwards)

�鶹Լ�� Sounds for Android Automotive is installable via your car’s App Store. This process will vary between car manufacturers and models. It is recommended that you refer to your car’s documentation for the steps to install applications.

Does the �鶹Լ�� Sounds App for my car use internet data?

The �鶹Լ�� Sounds app needs access to the internet to function and stream audio. It is recommended that you consult your car manufacturer’s documentation to explore the options available to you.

It is worth remembering that �鶹Լ�� Sounds is also available via other means in your car, such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, or Bluetooth Audio.

Listening via IP streaming devices

Like internet radios, these devices stream radio stations from the internet via a broadband connection and (WiFi) router but are intended to be part of a HiFi setup to allow high quality listening in a controlled environment. These devices generally do not suffer from limited processing and memory resources and so are capable of consuming our highest bitrate AAC+ streams over HLS or MPEG-DASH.

Full on-demand support is usually available with these devices using the HLS or MPEG-DASH protocols.

If you're listening via an internet radio device you should be able to listen to live �鶹Լ�� radio stations and access podcasts. Full on-demand programmes (i.e. programmes which have already been broadcast) are not available on internet radio; you'll need to access these either via the �鶹Լ�� Sounds website or app.

Got a problem with your internet radio device?

Check our Help fixing problems with �鶹Լ�� Sounds on your internet radio page. Try this first as it might help you resolve any problems. But if that fails your next point of action should be to contact your device's manufacturer. The manufacturer will use a third party that manages all the radio stations and podcasts.

Listening outside the UK?

Some content may be limited to the UK only. This could be all or part of a show. Sports coverage is the most common example where this happens.

No, there isn't a �鶹Լ�� Sounds app for computers or laptops. Our �鶹Լ�� Sounds app is available on mobiles, tablets and on many connected TVs.

On your computer, simply head to the �鶹Լ�� Sounds website to listen to live radio, on-demand programmes, podcasts, and music mixes.

You can also download podcasts on your computer or laptop to listen to when you're offline. Head to the How do I download a podcast episode from the website? page to find out how to do that.

They tend to rely heavily on the databases maintained by the content aggregators (the organisations or people who gather web content from different online sources) who often only make one version of the content available for each station.

Yes you can! The �鶹Լ�� Sounds TV app will either be pre-installed on connected TVs, or available to download from the TV app or player menu/store.

If the app is available on your TV, you'll know that it's supported and should work as expected.

�鶹Լ�� Sounds isn't available on my TV

All new TV devices that support �鶹Լ�� online services will support the �鶹Լ�� Sounds TV app.

For older devices, live radio stations are available from your digital TV's electronic programme guide.

To listen to on-demand radio programmes, you'll need to listen through the �鶹Լ�� Sounds website or �鶹Լ�� Sounds app for mobiles and tablets.

Apple TV

Unfortunately, �鶹Լ�� Sounds is not available on Apple TV. Sounds on TV is built using HTML5 technology which works on most connected TVs. However, as Apple TV does not support HTML5 we are unable to provide Sounds to these devices. You can use Apple AirPlay to stream content from �鶹Լ�� Sounds on your iPhone or iPad to an Apple TV.

Why is Radio 1 available on �鶹Լ�� iPlayer on connected TVs?

You might have noticed �鶹Լ�� Radio 1 is one of the channels available on our �鶹Լ�� iPlayer application. This gives you access to �鶹Լ�� Radio 1's video content (such as interviews with bands and actors or film reviews), not their radio content.

You can stream audio from the �鶹Լ�� Sounds app on your mobile or tablet through your Bluetooth speakers. Just pair your mobile or tablet with your speakers and press play on anything you want to listen to.

How do I pair my device with my Bluetooth speakers?

This depends on the mobile or tablet you have and the type of Bluetooth speakers you’re using, so it's best to check your speakers’ user guide for instructions.

Not working?

If your Bluetooth connection isn't working, make sure your devices are paired properly. Check your speakers’ user guide for instructions on how to pair your devices.

It's also worth checking:

The devices are in range. We recommend they're within 1 metre (3ft) of each other.
Both devices have sufficient power.
You're connected to the right device. You might need to disconnect from any other devices.
You haven't reached the maximum number of devices you can pair at any one time.
