Thousands to descend upon Minehead for party

Rock, post-punk and underground hip-hop are all mixed up in a weekend of underground music in Minehead.

Minehead isn't normally associated with the freshest underground music, but for one weekend in May, the latest acts across of mixture of genres will descend on the Somerset holiday resort.

All Tomorrow's Parties is a collective which holds music events whereby the festival goers and artists all stay in the same place over the course of the event.

They hold events in Sydney, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and .... Minehead.Μύ

Since the first party took place in December 2006, the event has gone from strength to strength. Held in Butlins, it attracts 5,500 to the town.

Richard Swift, sales manager for Butlins Minehead, said the local community was "very sportive" of the event, and that it does not cause any disruption to the town as it is self-contained.

The reason why it is so popular is that they curate their line-up in an innovative way.

Firstly, they get a guest curator in who chooses all the acts - this year American indie band The Breeders have picked their favourite line-up.

The other way they choose acts is by getting the community to vote on their website who they want to see play. They then try and book all the acts.

Past acts include Nick Cave, Portishead (who launched their comeback album there) and Seasick Steve.

This year, some of the 60 acts which are confirmed to play include Bristol trip-hop maestro Tricky as well as Teenage Fanclub, Bon Iver and the Foals over the weekend of 15 May.Μύ

The event's poster has been designed by top American artist Tara McPherson who will be there exhibiting her work.
